Description: Small prints of two of Millet's most famous works. These were seminal in art history, often seen as marking the beginning of a social realist turn in French art away from depictions of elite life to peasant and working class life. They were hugely influential on Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet. Salvador Dali was particularly fascinated by 'Angelus,' and wrote a famous analysis of the piece is which he insisted the two figures depicted were actually praying over their deceased child, rather than reciting the Angelus pray, as the title indicates. Later on, X-rays of the piece lent support to Dali's interpretation, revealing what appears to be a small, painted-over coffin. Somehow, upon first viewing, this particular print immediately suggests Dali's darker and more subversive interpretation of the piece. The figures faces look ghostly and grieved. The basket at their feet looks filled with swaddling.

Both prints have handwritten information in pencil on their lower borders, including where the originals were produced, Barbizon, a town about 20 miles from Paris, and one of the first rural places to be majorly disrupted by the advent of the French industrial revolution and the blindingly fast expansion of the capital. 

Condition: Good. Both prints have splotches of discoloration that are particularly visible in the background sky. 'The Gleaners' has a red-gold hue much different from the earthier tones of the original oil painting. It gives the piece a feeling of strong heat that evokes the revolutionary threat the middle and upper classes perceived when the piece was first presented at a salon in 1857.
