VTG Framed Print -- Isaac Levitan, "Golden Autumn" (1895) -- Printed in a run of 70,000 by the Pravda Publishing House in 1964
Description: This beautifully preserved print of one of Levitan's most famous works went for just 10 kopeks when it was produced in Moscow. 1964 was the beginning of the so-called Brezhnev era of the Soviet Union, which began with incredible prosperity but ultimately ended with the gamut of social, economic and political crises that broke the Soviet experiment.
Isaac Illyich Levitan himself was considered a master of Russian landscape painting. Born to an educated Jewish family on August 30, 1860, he made his way through the Russian art world at a time when anti-semitism was once again spiking in the Russian Empire, in part due to the assassination attempt made against the Tzar by Alexander Soloviev. His work is noted for it's muted, poetic tones and the way it seems to spiritualize nature by imbuing modest landscapes with striking emotional qualities. He was famously a friend of the Chekhov's, both Anton and his brother Nikolai, also a successful painter.
Condition: The print itself is in perfect condition. The crème frame is slightly discolored but undamaged.
