Description:  Gorgeous tile from the famed Fábrica do Outeiro, em Agueda. This factory was founded by António de Souza Carneiro in 1923, and produced standard housewares in addition to more decorative pieces, included the iconic blue tiles ('azuleijos') that adorn churches and homes all over the Portuguese-speaking world. 

While azuleijos most famously depict deeply religious themes, geometric patterns and rural motifs are also common. This piece falls into the latter category. A young women goes to fill two pitchers at the well. A bird flies past. Flowers sway beside her head. The whole tableau is framed by floral seals in narrow, permeable border. 

The tile has six felt feet on its underside, suggested it was used as a coaster.

Condition: Preowned -- very good; the glaze is slightly cracked, due to age, most likely; the bottom is smudged in places

Dimensions: 5-7/8" x 5-7/8"
