Rare -- Handpainted Korhogo Cloth Table Linens -- Napkins, Tablecloth and Seat Covers
Description: This set includes: 1 tablecloth (86.5 x 44"), 3 napkins (11.25 x 11.25"), and 7 chair seat covers (13.25 x 14.5"), and one storage piece (14.5 x 14.25")
The cloth was produced by the storied Senegalese textile manufacturer, Sotiba-Simpafric, which opened in Dakar in 1951, and closed in the 80s, when the west African country was flooded with cheap imported textiles from a number of Asian markets, most prominently India and China.
The company is known for effectively capitalizing on Western tourists' massive appetite for lively West African inspired cloths. This one was made in the style of Korhogo, invented by members of the Senufo people, a diverse group that hails from areas of Ivory Coast, Mali, Burkina Faso and Ghana. Korhogo is famous for its soothing earth tones, and for the mythological figures painted on it in thick dark lines with a special fermented mud and vegetal dye.
While this cloth is printed, it cleverly mimics the handpainted vibes of real Korhogo by incorporated irregularities in the lines of the various figures depicted.
